I try not to post 'fishing reports' most times because it feels like 'bragging' to me.
But if anyone asks me, even in an open forum, I tell what I know.
I feel that giving someone the information that may allow them to have a great fishig trip is more important than 'protecting' (whatever the heck that means) a place or body of water from 'overfishing'. People are more important than the fish.
I only fish on public waters. If I 'found' it, then anyone can, and trying to keep others away when I'm going to fish there feels selfish to me. If the fishing changes, for whatever reason, I'll adapt to it.
I'd only feel right about not 'sharing' if it was a place I'd decided that ANY fishing would harm, and that would include my own.

Ya'll ever see the results of stock truck chaser's? That can happen with to much info too...
That being said, when asked I don't mind giving out info to help others out, cause I like info too, and I want them to enjoy a good day out same as I. Posting fishing reports that I do post, are just wanting to share the Joy with my friends, just the same as I like sharing in theres...:)
Every stream in the United States has been fished. If you think there are secret streams you are only deluding yourself. This mentality has gone to many extremes. You can actually be banned on many sites for uttering a stream name. What a bunch of "Hog Wash".

EVERY stream in the entire state listed on this one.
Every state has sites like these.
ALL of the streams are secret....Ya right.

This one too....streams highlighted in various colors.
I have no problem with fishing reports especially on well known waters. Here in Michigan everyone pretty much knows the Ausable,Manistee & Pere Marquette etc.... I prefer to have the reports not name specific locations such as :"This stretch above this bend by this boulder". Most flyshops & guide services post info on their websites to let people know what's happening. I've posted reports before to share my experiences because besides the actual act of angling a fun part of it a chatting about it.
Smaller places you may want to keep close to vest at least I do-if you have a secret place you want to keep secret then don't blab about. If you do & then find it crowded with other people you only have yourself to blame.

Kelly,
I guess I have to go with the idea that if it's a small fragile stream with wild trout, and it's near a highly populated area, I'm going to let folks find it on their own. If that same stream had the stocker truck backed up to it once a week, it would be a different story. There's no point trying to "keep the Henry's Fork a secret". Or any part of it. There's a small creek an hour or so away from where I live, in a beautiful area that our friend John Scott has been showing to everyone who cares to log onto his thread. Several folks have commented how they would like to come to Idaho and give it a once over. His photos and descriptions of the area are spot on. However the wrinkle is this. This stream is quite heavily stocked in the spring and summer, and there's usually a crowd, and you won't have it to yourself. You'll be hopscotching with fellow campers and fishermen. The appeal of the stream just isn't the same as it is when the crowds leave after Labor Day, and the trout have had a chance to "go native". That's the time when John, and others find this stream most enjoyable, and the snow is on the mountains, and the wildlife that's pushed out of them are visible. It's also the time when most of us are ensconced in our fly tying rooms, with visions of next years trout flies rolling off the vises. Birch Creek is no secret, but I wouldn't like the same kind of light shone on another small creek a few miles from here, that could be fished out in a few days, if it had the same pressure. The truck doesn't visit.
Saltwater, large lakes and big rivers, I'll tell you pretty much anything you want or need to know. I'm notorious when it comes to helping out a newbie whose not having much luck. The one exception to this rule would be if I have been given a secret method, secret fly or secret spot by a friend and promised him or her I won't tell.
Private ponds and small streams that might be easily damaged by a few jerks or just too many people, my lips are sealed. There are still off the map places and I intend to keep them that way. 8T :)
