Before fishing:
If it is anytime before 10:00am I'll have a slug or two of whiskey; usually Single Barrel Bourbon or Single Malt Scotch at the car while suiting up.
If it is after 10:00am I'll have a beer or two.
During fishing:
Single Barrel Bourbon or Single Malt Scotch from my always on-hand flask.
After Fishing:
Beer at the car while putting stuff away followed by more beer once I get to camp or home; followed by whiskey, wine, Sterno, paint thinner or anything else on hand to help get a long winded night of BS and fly tying off to a good start.
Screw water; that stuff will kill you!

I drink diet cola on the way to the water and water while at the water, even with lunch. I have an Xtream purifying bottle, so it is always cold.
However it is a tradition with me to have a can of beer on ice when I get back to the vehicle and get my waders off. I sip it and reflect on the day, savoring the day's fishing experience even if I got skunked.
There's one place I fish that involves a long uphill hike back to the car. On hot days, the thought of that beer and relaxing with it is what keeps me going as I trudge upwards. On those days, the beer often gets cracked open before the waders are off.
But it is always just the single beer, so I drive home safely.
I suspect most fly fishers have traditions with a capital T. This is one of mine.

oldfrat I do the same one beer after fishing. My favorite fishing hole has an ice cold spring just off the bend I start fishing on.So my beer gets stuffed under a rootwad in the spring before I start out nice and cold when I get back.

Gon, glad to hear you share my tradition. Just to warn you though, there can be a lot of nasty bugs in streams. They are very tiny little things and it only takes one of them to get you.
If you are going to do the cool it in the water thing, consider putting it in a well sealed baggie first.

I have experienced CHARLIE HORSES of the CLYDESDALE version. So before, during, and after fishing, I prefer Gator-Aid. I don't care how bad it tastes, (I actually like it) if it has electrolytes, I'll drink it. As a side-bar, if you can imagine the worst cramp you've ever had, that is what it's like for a fish that has been played too long, especially in warm water. So, land them fast & release them fresh. Afterward, drink what you like. I also like Starbuck's iced coffees in the evenings. Hope this helps.

Brad,
I'm with you....mine is almost always diet Vernors ginger ale while driving to & fro, but a single beer after I get out of the waders. I occasionally sip a water during fishing.

lotsa coffee and a belt or two beforehand.
water on the water, unless there's a belt or two for a memorable fish or two.
as much beer as I'm comfortable with at lunch. and a nap.

Water. I don't like having sugary stuff because I think it attracts mosquitos and the like. As for alcohol, that's for afterwards. My casts are ugly enough as it is, and well, I don't have any piercings and would like to keep it that way.

Water with a dash of Lime Cordial when it is hot. Coffee when it is cold. And a good drop of Rum as a night cap, it keeps the mosquitoes happy. Jax
