Not all Rio lines are over weight; the Rio Classic is a notable exception and I think the Gold & Selective Trout are standard weight as well. Just like Sci Anglers GPX the Rio Grand is a 1/2 weight or so heavier.

I could be wrong too but this is what I was told by a Rio rep once.
Considering that the weight of a line is determined in grains and is the first 30 feet MINUS the front running line; I never trusted those fly line scales.
I agree fully and find the only real measure that matters is how I like the line on the particular rod....

I've got Rio Clouser lines on three of my LMB and striper rods and the lines are wonderful for casting...well Clousers. Not to mention any other big, heavy, air resistant flies. Super line! Just my 2% of a dollar. 8T :)
I just put a Rio Gold WF5 F on a TFO AXIOM 9ft 4 pc I just got. It casts great in the yard. I'll get it out next week on some water.
I own several other Rio lines and like them.
I put a Selective Trout on my 4 weight TXL and simply love it.
I've used Scientific Angler fly lines almost my entire fly fishing life, of now over 40 years.
This past year I bought an 8 wt Rio Outbound for use on my 9 1/2' 7 wt Sage XP, to use here in Montana, primarily for the large streamers that we are beginning to fish more and more as Fall progresses.
For big fish on big streamers in big rivers, I give this line a BIG thumbs up!
