problem with GI Joes, and Walmart and Sportsman's Warehouse is this: good luck finding someone who knows his or her stuff about fly fishing. ALl of the places I mentioned plus Creekside in Salem are good for tips, advice and yakking as well.

I guess I'm a little spoiled. I've got a sporting goods store with a decent fly department about a mile and a half away. There's a regular fly shop maybe 10-15 miles away, which seems too far, LOL. There's a few other good shops about an hour's drive from here.
Let's see, within a six mile radius I have:
The Riffle
Numb Butt Fly Company
Fly and Field Outfitters
Deschutes River Outfitters
The Patient Angler
All dedicated fly only shops that I spend a lot of time in. We also have a Sportsman's Warehouse, but they don't count in my opinion. If I open the radius up a bit to 30 miles or so I think the number of fly shops is something like 14. I'm very lucky.

Jeremy, you are killing some folks!
"not sure. are there any near Malden MA"
Anthony, some of the fly shops in the area are:
Orvis Boston- Faneuil Hall
River's Edge- Beverly
First Light Anglers- Rowley
Concord Outfitters- Concord
Firefly- Boston
Maine:
Kittery Trading Post
Eldredge Bros.- York
LL Bean
New Hampshire:
Stone River Outfitters- Bedford
North Country Angler- N. Conway
Wow thanks a lot I had no idea there was a fly shop in Fanuel Hall
There are a number of good fly shops within a short distance. The one I use is within easy walking distance of my home. In fact I usually walk to it instead of driving to get a little exercise.
D&B Outfitters about 20 miles away from me in Tulsa another one closer but never been to it,get such good service at D&B that I have no desire to go anywhere else.
In my immediate area, all independent flyshops that opened are now closed. To me, that was inevitable. Apparently these were opened by folks who didn't have a clue about marketing. I'm in Illinois, Northwest suburbs of Chicago. Opening a flyshop here is a bit like opening a snowball store in Alaska. One or two will make it, but there's NO need/market for three of four. So now my closest flyshop is an Orvis store about 30 miles away. Close enough!

I'd rather be in Wyoming!
Gardenfish I am one of those other Oregonians and I don't feel so lucky.
The closest one to me that I know of
is the tiny Blue Heron Fly Shop on the
North Umpqua River and it is about 100
miles from home. Now if you want to consider Bi-mart, Wal-mart as fly shops I can say
I have only to drive 20 miles.
