When you are steaming these materials, do you only have to steam them once to bring them "back to life"?
Or do you need to do it each time, right before you use the material?
I've heard of steaming feathers, but just really don't know much about it.

It depends on how you store them. If you keep them packed together pretty tight, you may want to if they get crushed. The steaming will fluff them out.

I've found that when winding on the strand of herl if you make it "slide down" the taut thread as you wind, it makes the longer barbs all line up to give a remarkably neat result.
