I've never tied anything smaller than 18, that little stuff like 24s, I'm am just going to buy instead of messing with it, so these sound like they will be a great deal for me.

Went over to Conranch and viewed the capes and saddles, very nice indeed, would have a bit of trouble getting them into NZ i think, but worth looking into - very reasonable prices too.

one other advantage of using capes is if you tie palmered hackled flies, the tapering of the feather is ideal for this, the saddle being parallel does not lend itself to these

Only if you tie the hackle tip in at the bend and wind forward OR, tie the hackle in at the shoulder and wind to the bend, securing with a tag of thread or some pre-tied in wire, winding it forward to the shoulder, and tying it in(my preference). If you do something else you'll have the hackles tapering in the wrong direction.
