Just had the same issue on a Pro model rod and they took care of it without the fee. All it cost me was the shipping to get it there. Give them a chance. They will make sure you are happy.

On the upgrade . . . If you paid the full difference in price then maybe you could reasonably ask for the upgrade. I did that with Orvis one time. Had Clearwater waders with an issue. emailed Orvis. They offered a full exchange even though the waders were 2 years old (I told them). I asked them if I could pay the catalog price difference and get the next model up, Silver Labels. They said sure and that's what happened.
So offer to pay the $50 price difference between the rods and you would probably get the upgraded rod.

I have decided, life is too short...I am going to fill the cracks this winter and move on.
The rod really casts exactly the way I wanted and paired with a new Rio Line (just got), it is fitting my style.
After all, if the company takes a chance on me breaking it and replacing for 25.00, I'll live with the short comings.
