I bought the Green Mountain combo at Wal-Mart. It is a 9'6wt medium flex graphite equipped a LARGE ARBOR reel with the backing, WF6 float line and loop to loop tapered leader already wound on. Just go fish. I paid the $119.95 price at the Wally up here where I live. I am not so expert as most of you but I was happy with it.I caught about 100 trout on it this past fall and winter on a stream. When I was in Phoenix, about 3.5 hours from me a Wally was changing their stock at the end of the season, saw only one left at end of season for $49....I bought it. For what I described, which includes a LARGE ARBOR reel, I think it is a steal at $49 and a good deal at $119.

"If what I'm hearing is true, it's a shame they used the Green Mountain name. Back in the 80's they offered rods under that name which had quality blanks and really the same blanks as their higher priced rods with cheaper components." (Smernsky)
Man, Orvis is killing me! I have a Green Mountain of that vintage, hardly used, (81/2 for 5 wt) that I'd planned to sell....Looks like Orvis has knocked the bottom out of what I could expect to get gor it.

I bought some 5wt Green Mountain line at Wal-Mart. After putting it on my fly reel, I thought there is no way that this is 5wt line, maybe a 8 or even 9wt! I took it off my reel and took it back to Wal-Mart and compared its diameter to another box of 5wt line and the stock person agreed that it was not the same and I exchanged it..............
But the line casts great! For $18 it was a steal! A very nice line, just make sure it isn't mis-marked with the wrong weight.
