In Chris Helm's video on spinning deer hair, he recommends not removing too much hair below the shank when exposing the hook, lest the fly become top heavy and land upside down on the water. Based on that tip, I have gone to wide gap stinger style hooks for most of my deer hair bugs for bass. They still have a flat bottom, but it's substantial.
Nice tie. Keep up the good work. After Christmas I'm going to buy a beard trimmer (when they all go on sale at Wally Mart) to try out for shaping deer hair flies. I hear it works pretty good, and double edged raazor blades are getting harder to find.
