lastly, should these flies be densely hackled or not? does it really matter?
I don't think there is a hard and fast rule on that. It appears that Al Campbell had lots of variations, and used varying colors and materials to "match the hatch" and varied presentation as well for the situation. The examples I've seen from his articles appear to have thin bodies and sparse, swept wings, but I'll bet that there are situations where fuller wings might be more productive. And you can see from the beetle in the second link above that sometimes a bigger body is just fine. That is the beauty of this pattern. Show us what works for you, and we'll all compare patterns when we're done with this one.

here is the one I'd like to submit, unless there are protests or calls for a ginger variant
Not from me. Tie your favorite variation. Welcome aboard, and I'll get you a PM with shipping info shortly.

Re: Shwapf swap - 7 spots left
Plenty of room left in this swap for tiers. Surely there are more tiers out there that would like to get in on this fun and easy pattern. John

Re: Shwapf swap - 6 spots left
Last day for sign up. If no one else signs up, we can still send 1 dozen flies each, and give everyone 2 of each pattern.
Re: Shwapf swap - 6 spots left
Sounds good to me. I am surprized this one has not filled up. John
Re: Shwapf swap - 6 spots left
Swap is closed. Each tyer will get 2 flies of each pattern.
I just got a package in from fly tying furs, that includes red, grey and pine squirrel tails. I think I'll like them better than the kip tails I've experimented with so far. BTW, fly tying furs is a sponsor here. They shipped my order out extremely fast, and their product seems to be a terrific value. The only "problem" was the $10 minimum order. I had to pick up some extra coyote, raccoon and muskrat tails to make the minimum. Hmmm....new swap ideas.
Re: Shwapf swap - closed!
OK, 2 flies per participant. Mine are Red Fox tail with black punch yarn bodies. They are in the capable hands of the USPS>

Re: Shwapf swap - closed!
Sounds good. Thanks for the update.
Re: Shwapf swap - closed!
I will submit 2 since we only have 6 people signed up. Olive and orange chenille with raccoon (size 12), and rust punch yarn with red squirrel (size 18)
