I've found that using 6, 7, and 8X tippet require a few more twists to clinch the line properly. If the hook you're using is pretty thick in the eye it takes a bit more for the line to bite because the bottom twists close to the eye can't close the gap they are wrapped around because the size of the hook spreads it apart where it comes back into the knot. Take a close look at the knot with just a few wraps vs. one that has 6-9 wraps. I also use a hemostat on occasion to get a better grip on the fly in order to tighten my clinch knots on the bigger hooks.
I have had the traditional 6 wraps slip on occasion, but never the 8 or 9 wraps.
