Western trout selection?
Hello fellow tiers, I want to give a friend in california a gift of some flies for trout to fish in the northern california region, and need a dozen patterns to tie you would not hit the water without. I have several in mind but need a little help from some of the people who fish out west. Thank you for your help and wisdom!

I would definately include some Humpys!!!

I suppose you mean wet and dry?

I'm waiting for our friend from Bishop (FlyTyer) to get on here....he'll know.

Yes both dry and wet!
I think tyflier hit it dead on. I really aprecciate your response and will take notes. Thanks for your help. Do you have any pattern for baetis imparticular that you go to? I also prefer beadhead nymphs. I seem to have better luck with them, or I just have more confidence with them. thanks again.
P.S. tyflier have you ever fished up over Magee pass for goldens at some of the high mountain lakes and streams?

I'd feel naked if I showed up at any of my local streams (Colorado) without a few parachute adams size 16 thru 12. I also like winged ants, elk hair caddis and a few hoppers.

Thanks again everyone for your help. Now to start tying!

All the patterns mentioned are good but for Northern California I would also recommend as must have flies:
Fox's poopah
copper john
golden stone fly nymph
Kern emerger
and in some areas, when the hatch is on, hexagenia patterns.

Ya pretty much nit the hail on the nead !!!
Don't forget to check out local fly shops.
There are always many local patterns that are obscure & can be the secret weapon (the difference between skunked, or success on may waters)......leave it to tyflier to be an over achiever (lol) !!!!!
