Mystery Hook
Can anyone help me ID this hook? It is similar to a TMC 205BL or a Mustad 37160 except the hookeye isn't in line with the hook point as in those two models. I'm looking for something in the #10 to #18 range.

Check with Allan Podell (tyeflies). He gave me a few wide gap caddis hooks that are the same. He didn't give me a model number at the time though. The ones he gave me are in sizes 12 - 18 so he may know the manufacturer and model number.
Hope this helps.

Gary,
This will either be the hook, or a good alternative:
Partridge YK2B - Yorkshire sedge hook

Montana Fly Company #7009 makes a less expensive version of the partridge hook.

Diane,
The hooks I gave you were the Mustad 37160 and Gary writes that they are somewhat different than the one he describes.

Do you have any hook setting problems with the 37160 hooks?

The hook you're describing is also called a "English Bait Hook." I use the Mustad 37160 in my crawfish pattern. When I want a larger hook, I look for these. The offset point version is often found in the bass/rubber worm section of the local tackle store. For the size 2 - 2/0 version of the crawfish, I use these.
Look for the Daiichi 1140 or Eagle Claw 1144.

Gary,
I really don't know because I don't tie many flies on this (37160) model hook. Looking at the hook, it seems that the space and angle between the point and the eye is too narrow. Whether this equates to 'misses' I don't know. I'm not sure if the specific shape of the hook matters as much as general appearance. I guess for those 3 reasons (space, angle, general appearance) I prefer a scid hook.
Long answer to your question and I really have no basis for saying my observations result in anything different.
