Quick question. Do you buy your Red dyed hackle or do you do the dyeing? Either way, do you know what dye is used to get such a clean bright and red red?

When I used to dye feathers, many moons ago, I used Veniard dye with very satisfactory results.

These days, though, many of my dyed materials come courtesy of a friend who uses mostly Dylon fabric dyes. For the pattern shown this dye was used for wing, tail and body hackle. The dye color is Tulip Red.

The wispy front hackle comes from a Whiting Farms saddle - I do not know what dye was used to color it.

Thanks. I can't seem to get that quality red from any dye I've used, including Veniard. Have not tried Dylon.
