Dying a Fly Line
Has anyone used dye to change the color of a fly line? I have a Cortland Peach that I want to dye and wonder if anyone has experience with this line and if so, what dye color did you use, and what was the resulting color?
Thanks

Heaven forbid! I have several Cortland 444 Peach lines...they all seem to catch fish...why would you want to dye the line? Just curious.

I've done it. I picked up a white line on clearance, so decided to dye it a color that was unusual. I picked up some royal blue rit dye from the grocery store and did it. The color turned out different than I expected. It had more a purplish tint to it, but I like it. Just be sure you don't have to water too hot when you are dying your line. You don't want to risk melting it. I'm not sure how the peach would react with different colors. The white on mine really shifted the color more than I expected.

Hi Grizzly Wulff,
Where in New Zealand will you be fishing? North or South Island? If you've not fished here before, you could probably contact someone at the Auckland Fresh Water Angler's club (their web site is [url=http://www.afac.org.nz/:244a3]http://www.afac.org.nz/[/url:244a3] ). The web page is pretty unfinished at the moment, but there are some contact details and I'm sure you would get some good advice.
If you are planning to travel between the North and South Island, be aware that a number of rivers in the South Island have become infested with Didymo! It's required that after fishing in any body of water in the south island that you clean your gear (or at the very least dry it out completely and then leave it fully dry for 48 hours).
Anyway, hope you enjoy your visit here!

P.S. While I think of it, I'm not sure if there has been any change in the "rules" of what you can and cannot bring into the country since bird flu? Already tied flies would be fine, but you might want to double check before bringing a fly tying kit if that's part of your plan.

Grizzly Wulff; Peach will work just fine in New Zealand. That is if you can extend your leader to its full length say 15 feet. That should keep the flyline well out of the trouts window.
There are Guides in N.Z. who will swear you need Olive or Brown lines and will defend their position with vigour. Like most things to do with flyfishing.Personal choice and inclination play a big part.
I still think your Peach line will do the job. It has for me on many occasions over the years.
I also subscribe to the school of thought who reason Trout see the flyline as a silhouette in a shade of grey if in fact they do determine colour as do we humans. Jax

Grizzly Wulff, as a New Zealander I would certainly recomend that you dye that peach fly line I know some peaple will say you do not need to but most of them have never fished to a fussy Trout in a New Zealand spring creek.
I would recomend an olive colour but on a peach line you may need to go for a shade darker than you think. Any heat set clothes die should work o.k.
If you want some up to the minute reports on the North Island before you head over please feel free to email me.
All the best.
Mike.

You can dye your fly line with Rit. Since it is peach I don't know how the color will turn out with various Rit colors. We used to dye our shooting heads years ago (when we were rolling our own) and Rit seemed to do the job very well.
I still dye my Cortland braided running line with Rit to match it up to various shooting heads.
Good Fishing,

Dan,
You probably CAN dye it, but why bother?
We really can't know if the process will degrade the lines performance any. Why take a chance with a trip of a lifetime.
Think about how bad it would be if the line cracked, sank, or even parted while you were down there.....
Buy a new line in a color that you think will work best.
Good luck!
Buddy
