WOW is right. That "bird brain" is a better fisherman than me.
WOW is right! You can't tell me that isn’t a behavior learned from either watching people feed bread to the fish or noticing that bread attracts fish. There is a Night Heron (same species of heron as in the video) that lives on the lake behind my house. He has somehow found a way to coordinate with small 12-13 inch bass in the lake. What they will do is; as the bass slowly cruise along the shore, the heron will position himself about 4-5 feet beyond the bass and wait for the bass to swoop in on the small fish, driving them right to the bird, where he grabs his dinner. Then, the bass move about 5-6 feet beyond the bird, and after a few seconds, the heron will rise up and attack the fish, scattering them right into the waiting bass. The panicked fish are just trying to get away from the attacker(s) and don’t notice the waiting ambush until it’s too late. They leapfrog each other down the bank, each taking turns feeding. Somehow they have developed a symbiotic relationship that benefits both species. I’ve observed this on a number of occasions, usually stopping my fishing just to enjoy the show. I can’t tell if it’s the same bird/fish, butthey always work the same 50-75 yards of bank so it probably is.
