Conejos River
Many years ago, I back packed and fished the Conejos river in southern Colorado. I caught some nice cutthroat trout in the river and in a high country lake that fed one of the tributaries with a spinning rod as I did not fly fish back then. I've been thinking about returning to that area to see how it fishes with a fly rod since I need to go to Colorado Springs for business in early September. Does anyone have an idea if the fishing is still good in that area?

I fished the Conejos earlier this month with a guide from Conejos River Anglers. It was my first trip to this area and my wife and son were taking the car on a day trip, so I needed somebody to fish with who could get me to the fishing. I caught 3 very nice browns, about 15-18", and I did not see sign of many other fish. I was glad to have the guide with me as we changed flies at least a dozen times trying to find something they would eat. This was during runoff and we were fishing a braided area of the river that probably won't have water in it in September. I think I was a little unlucky with my choice of days, but I understand that the fish can be sort of finicky there.
If you go to the Conejos River Anglers website, you will find some flies that work for this area. They are big on San Juan worms with some flash in them and on a small stonefly pattern called the Salvation. I caught one fish on a Salvation and the other two on a Ruby May. I'm sure that the flies will be different in September and the flows will be WAY down by then.
Good Luck!

We're there now, and the water level is slowly dropping to a fishable level. It is a finicky river, you can get all kinds of fish one day and not turn one the next. There all kinds of hatches rounding into form right now, but in my experience it is only about the next 6 weeks that it is relatively easy to fish. Kerr Lake is supposed to be good fishing also. It's mainly a brown trout river, maybe leftover cutts from stockings long ago in some places. PM me for more.
