For what it's worth, I just went on line with Bass Pro Shops, they have lots of lug soled shoes, starting at $39,95....I like felt but when I hike a couple of miles down into the Garden River in Ontario, I need lugs. Most all are made off shore anyway and yes, they all wear out fast.
I do not like lugs on the soles and heels of my hiking boots, nor do I like the lower part coated to prevent moisture penetration.
What I did for 27 years in the U.S Army Light Infantry, was wear the same two sets of Jump Boots. I don't know how many times I re-heeled them or replaced the soles. Must have walked a million miles in them (at least). Custom fitted for the trail, "Have Feet, Will Travel!" ~Parnelli, White Bear Lake.
Anyway, to custom fit your hiking boots to fit your feet, soak them overnight in a tub of water. Then put them on and wear them all day until the leather dries completely. Only then do you apply a wax or mink oil to the boots.
Buy a set of slip overs (Minnesotan: Rubbers) for the boots if the ground is damp with dew or it is raining. This will keep sole from drawing water in thru the stitches and seams.
If you need some traction, there are tungsten carbide tip slip overs, that normally used for ice fishing, but they work great where you need a penetrating purchase in the ground for grip.
Both of these slip overs roll up very compact, and will fit in a large pocket or side pocket of a backpack.
Always have two pair of boots, and rotate daily between the boots. Never wear the same boots two days straight.
~Parnelli
Len, I bought a pair of LLBean lugged aquastealths, River treads I think is the model.
The lugs are replaceable as they are just hex head screws.
I may wear the soles and lugs out but I don't think I will ever wear the boot out, really well made.
order them half size bigger than normal hiking boot..........
take out the insole........
Three years I have worn them.......

spinner1....I'm assuming you're NOT talking about Studded boots, but rather good old fashioned Rubber lugs. Hiking boots of sorts correct?? If so, there are plenty of boots available to suit your tastes, the Patagonia boots are a nice line, and so are a few others on the market. Have you seen the Korkers?? They allow you to switch out the sole for any other sole in thier line, including some nice tral hiking soles that I looked at in person this past week. The cool thing is that if they do wear out, you can just slap on a new set in no time flat! Check them out, you just might be happy that you did.
