Alaska is a HUGE state! What areas will you be traveling to and what species will you be targeting?
In general, if you are seeking to fly fish for salmon, look for at least an 8 wt with a very good reel. If you are fishing for rainbows/arctic char, you could go with a 6/7 wt. If you are fishing for grayling, no bigger than a 4 wt.
Probably the best, go-to fly for all around fishing in Alaska is the ESL (egg sucking leech). Other streamers, nymphs, egg patterns and flesh patterns work fine.
Your time frame is great to catch the early run of King Salmon on the Kasilof and Kenai Rivers (Kasilof is great for shore based fly fishing... you'll probably need a guide for the Kenai).
Most of the lakes will have resident rainbow trout, land-locked salmon, or arctic char and possibly even northern pike (or any combination of these). Lightweight spinning tackle with mepps type spinners or small spoons will work great.
The first run of red salmon will be just beginning to show up on the Russian River and it shouldn't be too crowded yet.
There are an abundance of rivers/streams/lakes across the road system. There are some great books available: Go to www.bookfinder.com[/url:7b5f4] and type in "The Highway Angler" in the title and Author Gunnar Pedersen or another book "Fishing Alaska". These will give you much information about road accessible areas and tackle.
You could also visit my web www.alaskanfishguides.com[/url:7b5f4] for general information, fishing tips and other ideas.
Hope that gets you started.... good luck.
