HITE great name, welcome to FAOL. what is your budget for an outfit. I would suggest a 8.5' to 9' 6 wt with a floating line. in a moderate fast action rod.
Eric
Eric is probably much more knowledgeable than I, but in our part of the Midwest, fishing for the species you mentioned, my choice for a single outfit would be a 5wt, 8 1/2 to 9', with weight forward floating line.
Whatever you choose, have fun & good luck!
Welcome to FAOL.

Was looking at a Cabelas outfit. But I DK.
I have a Gander Mountain frontier IM6 9' five weight rod with a scientific anglers reel loaded with line and backing that came with a bunch of other stuff I bought to resell. I'll sell you the outfit including a divided tube for the rod for $90 plus actual shipping and insurance cost which should be less than $20.. The rod looks brand new. I have lawn cast it a few times and I don't believe the previous owner did anything more than that with it.
Any way to find actual shipping costs?
send me a private message with your address and I can find out from the post office web site.
I know that everyone wants to run out and buy an outfit. You can't go wrong with a 5 or 6 wt. Remember, this isn't like buying your last outfit, this is just your next outfit. Before spending money, it might be very helpful to go to either a Trout Unlimited meeting and get involved with the local chapter or find a FFF (Federation of Fly Fishers) club close by. I found this one in Louisville: http://www.louisvilletu.org/ If you are closer to another state, this web site could help you find a chapter close by: http://www.tu.org/about-us/council-chapter-contacts
Here is a link to two FFF clubs in KY. One in Shelbyville and the other in Burlington:

There are going to be people at these organizations that can help you with your decision in person as well as offer some casting instruction. It's one thing to buy a car, another to learn how to drive it.
Orvis, Bass Pro and Cabelas all have nice articles on their web sites about choosing the right rod. He is one such link from Orvis that will say more than I can in a paragraph or two: http://www.orvis.com/intro.aspx?dir_id=758&subject=4797
After reading that and you have any questions just feel free to post them. Good luck and let me welcome you to this board and the greatest hobby on earth.
Rick
I have a club close by and hope to make a meeting this Wed. http://www.derbycityflyfishers.com/
5 or 6 wt, both are great for general use, I like the six weight. Mostly just because that was what I started with. And don't let Ohiotuber fool you, I am sure he has forgotten more about fly fishing than I have ever known.
