I saw this jig while looking for something else, but the split ring idea between the hook and the lead (actually the action it creates) got me thinking that this concept (the free action of the hook on the ring) thrown out to a large group of innovative tyers reading this might come up with something new in the world of Fly Tying that would prove productive?

Neat rig - couldn't you get the same effect with a weighted fly (conehead, dumbell eyes, etc) and a loop knot?

I've seen it done with barbell eyes on a short hook, or even a shank with the bend removed, then attached with a loop of dacron to the body of the fly tied on a separate hook. I'll see if I can't scrounge up a pic to post.
Similar, but not the same. The loop on a weighted fly gives you one joint (at the hook eye), this gives you two. A loop-connected articulated fly would give you an even more similar effect. For my fishing, if the fish are picky enough to want an articulated fly but not a standard one...well, they're probably picky enough that I'll be getting skunked anyway. :P
The solution is easy. Tie your fly to the leader with a non slip mono loop knot and then put on a split shot ahead of the knot.Quote:

OK....how about a short section of heavy flourocarbon....Say 1/2"?....with loop knots on either end, and a heavy tungsten bead in between?
You could pre-rig them, and add them to any fly you desired. Would be nice for saltwater in fron of a larger bucktail I bet, for dancing on the bottom.
Here's some easy options:
Start with a small size duo lock snap, one of those all wire snaps that opens both ends.
Crimp a split shot onto the longest wire on it. Or slide on a tungsten bead, whatever 'weight' you want, onto the wire of the snap. Just be sure you can still open at least one end of it.
You could then tie the weighted snap to your line, and then open one end and attach the fly of your choice.
Another option:
Take one of those small fly clips (the ones that advertise as being able to float with a dry fly?) and thread it onto a piece of fine wire (stainles steel safety wire would work well-available at any 'speed shop'). Make a short loop and twist the ends together, trim the excess wire. Flatten the loop and crimp a split shot over the point where the wire is twisted together, leaving the clip out one side and a small loop of the wire out the other to tie your tippet to. This way you could attach the fly of choice to the clip.
If you don't want or need the ability to switch the fly easily:
Select the split shot size you want. Slide your fly of choice onto a piece of fine wire,as above. Make a loop of the wire that when flattened will extend out both sides of the split shot far enough to leave a line tie eye and allow the hook to swing freely.
I'd think that at the weights and sizes fly tyers would use, you'd get the best action if you used a loop knot to attach the rig to your tippet.
You could always make a lead mold, or modify an existing one, to cast these. But that would be a bit of an investment unless you planned to make lots of these things.

It is probably heresy, but if all you are looking for is for the hook eye to be able to freely move in the connector, then simply use Fas-Snaps. I have used them for years on all my bass and brim leaders that I use for floating flies and poppers, and "won't leave home without them". You can change "bugs" in a heartbeat, and they don't turn bass and 'gills off. They are light enough that your bug will float them. No, I DON"T use them when fishing for trout! The Duncan Loop, which is a slip knot, is used by the cast/spin group for attaching their lures for the very reason that it permits free movement, and therefore full action, of the lure on the line.
