Hat?
We just spent a couple of weeks in the subfreezing temperatures. Here in TN we get that kind of weather from time to time, but it's been along time since we have had this much cold for such a long length of time.
So, I got a taste of the shack nasties, and really feel sorry for you guys up north. Thinking of our fellow anglers up north, I got to trying to think of something that I could do, to give them some releif or a smile to brighten thier day. At least a little. I can't tie flies well, so coming up with a new fly to for you guys up north is out. I've never built a rod for you guys to see. So what can I do? Oh yeah, I can ask dumb questions.
Now we've done what's in your vest before, but I don't recall doing what's on your head before? Now, I realize this'll come as a shock, but I'm new to fly fishing. I don't have a fishing hat. I hope that won't get me kicked out of FAOL, but I don't have one just the same. But I been thinking of getting one.
Now I am not superstitious. No sir. Not a bit. Cross my fingers and hope to die. I truly believe you can catch fish no matter what sort of head gear you may have on. And I defy anyone to scientifically prove that you can't catch fish without a certain hat. Though of course your odds go up drastically if you are wearing the appropriate head gear and eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch, but that's not superstition, that's just the facts.
So, what's your hat look like? More importantly, what gives your hat its mojo?
hNt
PS Before anyone fusses at me, I do own a FAOL cap that Betty had made. And it is my favorite cap. :D

I wear a ballcap in the summer. When in my toon, I wear a boonie hat most of the time, unless it might get cold. I put a stocking cap over the ballcap when it gets cold, and a balaclava underneath when it gets even colder.
I used to have a succession of lucky hats but in recent years I just wear whatever hat I can grab on the way out the door, or I find in the, er, stuff in my truck.

I wear my Tillie hat whenever I go fishing. When I bought it, they only came in white or very light tan so I dyed it a blotching sage green. Simply put, Tillie makes the best hats for outdoor wear. IMHO.

Ball caps but the one with the mose mojo is my Cabelas hat, the more nasty and broke in the better!

I've worn a ball cap for years. The last couple of years I've worn a boonie and like it. I've always wanted an Indiana Jones type fedora but they're really spendy. Lately, I've been thinking about this one;

I ware is a tillie hat, found it protect the ears, you got to think about them thing, dont want have an ear cut off due to skin cancer. The tillie broad brim keep rain off my glass and sun off the neck. Being a fair skin red haird person who never was able to tan and dont want to smell like sun screen it the best by, and I love my tillies. I own three one for summer one for winter and my first for every day uses.
Ghost.
PS, I never go out the door with out my tillie firmly on my head.

I have hundreds of hats but the 'lucky' fishing hat is a 15 year old sweat stained up/downer.
I also get good mojo from 'found' hats.
One in particular was a well worn cap discovered washed up in the dunes.
It must have been in the water for some time because it actually had barnacules growing under brim
The wife didn't like the looks of that and washed it.
It was still a very comfortable hat but it was never the same, mojo wise

Broad brimmed always --no baseball caps for me while on the water. A green straw hat that breathes in warm & dry weather. A waterproof canvas hat in wet and cold weather. A felt cowboy hat with drop-down ear covers in really cold weather.
I do wear baseball caps around town, all with fly-related logos and my favorite being the Baghdad Fly Fishers one I got for donating some stuff to them when they were starting up.
