Looking at the most common proceedure in tying Czech nymphs it calls for Palmer winding a rib over a dubbed body followed by adding a plastic wing case over the body AND THEN adding a second ribbing wrap over the whole thing. To simplify the process I question the need for the first ribbing. What is the need for it? Thanks.

I've only seen a couple of these patterns, but they use a different material/color for the body ribbing than what is used for the whole fly after. Perhaps it gives a different, more desirable effect?

The recipe I used to tie called for an inner rib of pearl flash type material (I used both Krystal flash and some pearl sewing/accent type thread for this) and an over rib of thin monofilament.
My thoughts are that the under rib gives flash, the over rib provided the appropriate body segmentation and helps make the clear plastic back casing more durable. I did try using just the flash material for one over rib to try to do both jobs, but the fish did cut the stuff. The rib unwound, the casing slid over, etc.
These things were time consuming to tie, but I did catch fish with them. I have long since given them up for easier flies.

For a straight Czech Nymph I use Oliver Edward's style !!! I also have my own series of
Caddis Larva (and Adults); The Hydro-Psycho Series that involves a combination of James Matthews Organza Gilling with an Oliver Edwards weave, and Vili Auti Legs !!!!
I like fishable realistic tying on the Larva !!!!

I have to agree with you completely. Two ribs are definitely overkill. I started tying and fishing Czech nymphs last year. After tying my first couple of dozen according to the pattern book, the rib under the shell disappeared completely. I can honestly say that not a single trout, brim or bass ever complained. I've never been a belt and suspender man when it comes to fishing flies. 8T :)
BTW, I wrap that single, outside rib down pretty hard so it definitely stays in place. I make sure the mono bites into both the shell and the body dubbing.
