reel for 1 wt.
I bought the Sage SLT 1 wt. from James Sentell here on FAOL. I was waving it about in my backyard today and loving how it felt. Dear Wife is rather enamoured of it also. Hmmm.
I have a reel that is light enough, but it is 3 1/2" and looks ungainly on that lovely wand. I do not want a Ross San Miguel or anything even close to that spendy. This is a 1 wt rod after all. ANy ideas for a reel say 2 1/2 inches in diameter that will not break the bank?

Dear Gardenfish,
I'll suggest that you look around for a nice used Hardy Featherweight. A lot of folks put Hardy Flyweights on their 1 weights but I think they look too small.

Try an Orvis CFO I. You might even be able to find a really good deal on one now.

I have 5 Sage SPL's and I use a SAGE 3100 on them. Expensive, but they are nice and light.

Gardenfish, at least check [url=http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catalog.TextId?hvarTextId=44559&hvarTarget=search& cmCat=175-0-0&cmid=FFFP2:0776a]THIS[/url:0776a] one out. The ultralite version.

I bought the Cabelas Cleer Creak 1 weight a couple years ago and knew just what reel I wanted to hang on it - the Ryobi 255MG. It's a simple click and pawl reel made of magnesium that weighs just this side of nothing. They were discontinued some time ago, but do show up used. This is the same reel that J. Austin Forbes modeled their magnesium reel after - It may have been manufactured by the same company, but at a much higher price. I think you can still get the Forbes model, which might be a better match for a Sage! In any case, you'll find the ultra-light quality of magnesium a delight on a 1-weight. Tight lines, Alec

thank you for your feedback. Now I have some research to do. As always, this forum is the place for what I need.

Gardenfish,
I have a little reddington reel on a 6' 3wt that I think compliments it nicely. The real is silver and I think it balances it nicely. You might take a look. I don't think the real was very pricey.
Adam
PS The drag is almost worthless (granted it is the only click and pawl I have had for years so I may not be the best judge), but it is fine for the fish I target with that rod.

Hi Gardenfish, RW here,
I have a 1-weight and I use the Hardy flyweight reel on it...2 1/2 inches. It hods 30 yards of 12 lb. backing and a 90 foot 1 or 2 wt. fly line with no problem. Balances perfectly and I think it looks just great. Been using it for about 2 years now, with excellent success on fish up to 4 pounds.
I got a spare spool for it and one line is a WF1F and one is a DT2F. So there you have it.
From a 1-weight owner and user 75 percent of the time.
