Help Identify
Could anyone help identify this fur. It has a very heavy underfur, is white with dark, black or brown tips. I don't know if the photos are good enough for identifying but thanks for trying.

I was wondering what happened to that cat...
But seriously, how long is the pelt? What are it's approximate dimensions? How long is the hair? I almost wonder if it might not be some type of artic fox based on the coloration. My friend who traps for a living tells me that the lenght of the hair is effected by the lenght of the day (during winter the hair grows longer because the days are shorter) and that the amount of underfur is affected by the temperature (colder weather stimulates more underfur to grow)

It appears to be about 22" x4". That's x2. The hair length is about 2". I have an artic fox tail and I kind of wondered about this being artic fox. The underfur on this is incredibly thick. Probably the thickest I have ever seen.

first let me make sure i understand you correctly. your patch of hide measures 22 inches longx4inches wide. Is this correct? is the fur split down the center or has the animal been skinned so that the whole think is like a big tube?
If so then my guess, uneducated and underinformed as it may be is that you have a piece of an arctic fox pelt. Wtih the narrow dimension being only 4" it really doesn't give much of an idea how large the critter that donated the skin was.
also does it apper that the dark tips are concentrated in a line down the center of the pelt? if so then that may be a mark of wherre the spine of the animal was. many animals have a slight discoloration along the very top of thier backs...

Is it by chance urine stained or please:D

It seems that two pieces were stitched in the center making this piece about 44" long by about 4" wide, each piece being about 22"x4". The two pieces seem quite symmetrical making me think that they were from the same animal, possibly from the center of the back and down each side. The tips are slightly dark all over but where the pieces are sewn, the hair markings are slightly darker on both pieces almost like it could have been from the neck (maybe?)
Sorry Steve, no urine stain.
Something else that may help, this was a fur that a lady would wear around her shoulders, I believe from about the 40's.

Get it a bit damp. If it smells like wet dog, it's coyote. Even the best coyote furs smell like wet dog if you get them damp.

I have a patch of male coyote hair and it is quite different. The patch of coyote hair I have is a tannish brown and quite sparse compared to this.
