montague flash rod
Hi All,
I just picked up a 8 1/2', 3 pc montague flash fly rod. The tube says 1flf flash fly, it has 2 tips and one looks like it has a little larger tip top and it has a red reel seat. The thing looks like its new. Does anyone have any history on this rod like when it might have been made, what line weight it is for? Is it something I should fish or keep aside?
I know nothing about bamboo rods as you might guess!
Thanks JohnP

Doing a Google search of "Montague flash rod" I got several hits..
I found one for sale, refinished, which may or may not distract from its value, for $150.
Montague was a mass producer of bamboo rods and were at the lower end of the price scale.
I would fish the rod....or hang it on the wall with a nice wicker creel perhaps.
You may want to keep your eye on this one for an idea of the value. From Centennial Publications - A Reproduction Catalog of the Montague Rod & Reel Company #39 the Flash fly rod has 3 joints with 2 tips, selected flame finish split bamboo, improved rolled welt-nickel plated ferrules. Nickle plated locking band reel seat & Tungsten steel snake guides except for the hard steel one ring butt guide. @ colors of silk. Came in 3 lengths : 8 1/2' @ 5 oz.,9' @ 6 oz & 9 1/2' @ 6 1/2 oz. for the price of $6.25. With the high priced " POWR-BUILT " fly rods rods at $50 & their Zephyr Brand light weight rods of 7 1/2' ,8' & 8 1/2' it would seem a #6 or #7 weight flyline might suffice.
