Grey Coachman
I am wanting to tie a few of this pattern. The only reference I can find is in the below link. The recipe appears to be incorrect. My question is: What material should be used for the tail?
Thanks - Tim

It appears to be moose mane from the picture. if it's not it is something so similar as tomake no deifference.

Looks like a couple of thin gray biots of some kind? But it's difficult to tell from the picture. I'd try some duck wing biots if you have then and the're thin enough but I wouldn't be afraid to sub either some grizzley or dark dun hackle fibers for tailing material either. I wouldn't get too hung up on trying for an exact match on the tail material. Anything in keeping with the general color of the pattern should work.

looks like grey biots to me but.... i'd substitute moose mane for the tail. not sure if biots are a good tailing material for dry flies

id say deer or maybe elk hair. it should not really matter what its made out of, i dont think a fish would refuse a fly because the tail material is wrong.

Agreed.
Moose mane, grey or black bucktail, grizzly hackle tips...use your imagination, that's the fun of fly tying! :)
