I'm no entomologist but I'd say that AC was a bit off track thinking that was a midge.
I'd say that bug was one of the small, parasitic, solitary wasps.

Taxon It was called the nuclar bug in ACs archive.
Dudley The reason I was asking, I tied up my verson of it and tryed it at the trout durbey at the blue river in OK. I wish I had tyed more of them . After 17 trout it fell apart. The only bug I found that had any red in it was a dragon fly. Thank you for your input.

Okay, I found the article, Nuclear Bugs. It was written by Al Campbell. Somehow, when you said AC's archives, I managed to translate that to JC's archives. Ah well.

I believe Al's "Nuclear Fly" to be of order Diptera (True Flies), probably of family Lauxaniidae (Beach Flies), possibly of genus Minettia, which contains (16) N. American species.

Taxon Thank you for the info. It gives me a place to start. I would like to see if this type of bug is natve to the blue in OK.
Robin 1st. place in the flyfishing divison.
I hope to go to the blue this sat. The tp&w won't stock PK.for one more week and I can't wait that long. Hope to see you there.
