Splicing lines has been around for decades. Northwest steelheaders have been using similar methods to customize fly lines for the past 40+ years and I believe they learned these methods from others. It likely all started with the advent of plastic/PVC coated fly lines.
Whom ever started the methods the article you link to is very informative.
Been using Scientific Anglers L2L leaders for a few years now and love them. No need to do anything special. Just twist in a new leader....if you ever wear one out in the first place!
I went to the link bazakwards posted and that is some good stuff. I used the method described by Tom D in his ''No More Nail Knots'' article this week to attach a new leader to my 8wt line. I used super glue for the connection. It seems to hold good and I will put it to the test tomorrow at our club outing.
I don't know where to get zap-a-gap. Is this something I have to get at a fishing store or a fabric shop? I've heard about it here in the BB alot but have never seen it sold anywhere. Jim
I have no idea when Mr. Whitlock came up with this method. I learned of this type of connection when Al Caucci showed it to me about a dozen years ago. Using this splice, Caucci recommended Krazy Glue, the result is a connection that is smooth, strong and none that I've ever made has ever failed.

Joe Robinson wrote the article Zap-A-Gap Splice in the Fly Fisherman March 1988 issue
Al Caucci wrote The Krazy Glue Leader Splice in the December 1995 issue.
Whitlock's No Knot Connections was from December 2003
I believe Whitlock did have an earlier article on this subject, but I couldn't find it
Harry Lemire, well known Northwest steelheader, is credited with creating custom lines for 2 handed rods using what is referred to as the "Zap a Gap" method to toss heavy sink tips and big flies. I have been informed that he likely learned the technique from George Keough. I can't seem to find much information on Mr. Keough. Anyone have anything?
I don't use the nail not anyway. I use the Castwell Knot to a furled leader loop. So simple and quick can do it in the dark, no tool needed, and holds. Thank you Mr. Castwell.
I have a friend who didn't like loop to loops using the furled leader. I have converted some L2L's to furled leaders for him to try. Works like a charm. Remove the leader that came with the L2L and replace it with a furled leader. Make up a few different furled leaders with the L2L connect and you can change leaders at will with a simple twist....and then another twist.......
