LF's Hot Buttons
Right on LF , I watched a herd of people doing the same thing to sockeye . I couldn't stand it and left . You can't talk to these mental morons either , the standard excuse is "well everybody else is doing it so why shouldn't I . Herd mentality .
I got a kick out of The pat on the head release method . In future I shall be a little more polite myself .
I sure appreciate your not sugar coating snagging and telling it like it is . Good article . One of your best IMHO.

Nothing will flip my switch more than watching some twit dragging a salmon on a rope up the bank ... down the road a half a mile to his vehicle...... road rash is not something i would think desirable in table fare... Back when i use to bring Salmon home ... we use to tie them to a pole and carry the fish off the ground .Respect for the critter that gave his life for your supper.

Nice article LF. Last fall I was fishing a favorite spot on the Nisqually for some chums. The corkie fishermen were shoulder to shoulder so I moved down stream to a nice gravel bar and started watching the water. The fish were moving 25 feet off the bar. The corkies were casting to the other side of the river then doing a fast retrieve to snag or "floss" a fish.
When I hooked a nice fish just off the gravel bar a horde of corkie fishermen descended on my spot. I had trouble bringing the fish to hand because of the crowd.
I watched several fish brought in by the corkies, only to have the hooked ripped from whatever body part it was imbedded in, and the fish was kicked back into the water.
When I asked one of the corkies why he treated the fish that way, his response was, "Why Not? They're just gonna die anyway." I guess he missed the fact that a fish that dies before spawning means less fish in the following years.
Treat the finney critters with respect or stay home!

I see the same thing here on the Lake Ontario tribs. and it seems to get worse every year. There is one particular creek in my neck of the woods that I check every day starting in early September, in order to be on the water the day the Salmon run begins. For about two days there is enjoyable fishing before word gets around that the fish are in and the assembled masses appear. 99.5% of these morons either haven't a clue as to what stream ettiquete means, or they just don't give a crap. The Big Browns are in now, but the conduct of the masses have become so disgusting that don't care to witness it.
Sorry for getting so long-winded here. I didn't start out to.

I am going to throw something else into this conversation.
It appears to me that in the State of Washington snagging salmon is somewhat socially acceptable. I will take this a step farther. In Washington the practice of ignoring fishing/game laws is socially acceptable. It seems the greater public doesn?t have much concern about whether fish are caught in a sporting manner and in compliance with fishing regulations or not. Even amongst fishermen themselves there is an ?I got one over on the game warden? attitude.
I am almost positive that I could point out blatant disregard of fish and game laws such as snagging to someone that is not a fisherman and they would likely wonder what makes it illegal and never give the situation another thought.
Every year when the salmon run the topic of snagging and poaching is discussed ad-nausea across the Northwest internet fishing boards and every year we see the same thing. More and more jerks snagging and poaching fish. In my opinion the situation will never get any better until it becomes socially important enough to stop. In the State of Washington I don?t see that happening any time soon.

Great posts! Practically all of my hot buttons concern people's not honoring, by their behavior, the fish that they claim to love so much. How about those anglers that continue to fish when water temps get too high. What's the point of catch and release if the fish's mortality is a near certainty.
While I've no way to prove this, I suspect the anglers that treat fish disrespectfully are pretty much the sames ones that are so oblivious to stream ettiquette and tradition.

Disrespect for the fish, the fishery and fellow anglers is a major pet peeve of mine. It was nice seeing LF's article on it. I will however point out that I see a whole lot of offending "anglers" with fly rods in their hands as well. There are more non-fly anglers out there on the water so it's a given that there will be more of the spin and bait guys causing trouble. There are plenty of fly "anglers" out there however who are just as bad as the offending spin/gear guys.
Come up to NY and watch the circus at the 2 fly only zones on the Salmon River. Second thought . . . don't do that because if you do you will be sick and so mad you will not be able to see straight. I have talked with the DEC about closing those sections. Better than 80 percent of those "fishing" in those 2 fly only zones are nothing but glorified flossers/rippers/snaggers. Attaching a slinky to your fly leader and dredging with camoed flies is snagging. I see so many fishing sink tips and such who are simply lining every single fish they catch. It's just disgusting. I have seen the same in BC as well.
While fly-fishing is my first love, I'm far from a purist. In my job, I pretty much have to do it all and I enjoy doing so. I see nothing wrong with fishing fresh skein under a float on a spinning rod but then I guess many would label me a dirty bait fisherman.
My point is that I have seen more than share of abhorrent behavior from fly anglers. As mentioned in a previous post on this subject, there are some very high profile ?fly anglers? who are part of the problem and not the solution. So let's be careful not to single out those who don't fly-fish.
