Which Rod To Take?
Recommendations from shop owners and others suggest that when buying (and using) multiple rods choose two weights different eg, a 4 wt and a 6 wt. I mostly fish from a boat or canoe and I carry rods 1 weight apart (5 & 6 wts) and it seems to work for me -- one with a streamer and the other with a dry. I like to hear from others that may do this same thing. Thanks Dave

I just returned from 3 days fishing the Yellowstone River via a drift boat and we used a 5 wt for dry flies and a 6 wt for nymphing due to the extra weight of the nymphs. The dry flies were size 10 - 12 hooks. It worked great for us!
I also make a few rods for friends and if someone has a rod of a given weight and wants a second or third rod, I ask them their intended use of the new rod and the size and/or weight of flies they will mostly be using to suggest a rod weight. I let the use indicate the rod weight rather than the "2 weight rule".

I see no problem with having a 5 and 6 weight both. I recently traded in my 4 and 6 weights for a 5 weight Sage SLT to do it all. If I did a lot of drift boat fishing I might want to get a 6 wt XP as the 8 weight I use for warm water might be a little overkill.

Dave, I am with you. I would take a 9ft5W adn 9ft6W and rig them just as you didn... 5W for dry and 6W with a heavy fly. I reserve my 4W for wading on medium to small streams. BTW, I have two identical reels and interchange spools. That way, whichever weights I bring along (4 and 5 on small-med streams and 5 and 6 on lakes and larger rivers), I bring the same two reels. There's nothing like interchangable parts and spools should there be a mechanical failure on the water.

Sounds like a great idea. With time though, you will probably have a whole array of rod weights to choose from. Its an inevitable symptom of our disease. -Migs

Peter -- Great suggestion on reels!
Migs -- You are right I fished for 20 years with a Wright & McGill Featherlight glass 6'6" rod (6 wt) as my only rod and had a ball! Now I'm trimming my five 5 wts down to one!!
Thanks all for the input. Dave
