ECHO 69 Reel Warp
well, i thought it was a good reel when i bought it; light, sturdy-feeling, smooth, simple, yada yada. i've fished the reel four times on salt and once on freshwater and now i find the spool is heavily warped to the point of rubbing on the body. the body is even warped slightly too. being that it's been cool/cold the short time i've had it and that i've never left it in the car, heat can't be an issue. i've rinsed it thoroughly and dried it completely after every use and store it in it's pouch. anyone else have this problem with the Echo reels? i hope it's something that they've worked out of the reels or i feel i must buy a better reel that is alloy. oh the horror...

I'm no fan of composite reels but generally speaking under the conditions you mention they shouldn't wrap this easily. JC's question about your backing is the correct approach towards an answer; backing that's too tightly wrapped can cause distortion in a composite spool and might even affect the reel body. The same would happen if the line is too tightly wrapped.
Your warranty might cover this condition, check with the manufacturer.

i don't know which weight, but i'm pretty certain it's Micron in either 20- or 30#. is it the pressure of the backing that causes the spool to warp? i hope this doesn't mean i have to unspool the entire line and backing after every use.

well, the horror part was a joke about the 'horrors of shopping for a shiny new reel'. we all know that sucks because shiny new things suck, right? wait, i'm being sarcastic again, my bad.
to me, $70 is not cheap. $30, yes. i do think, tho, that i will spend the extra $30-50 and get a solid, 'better than good' reel if there is one in that price range. eBay is not an option as i will go through the shop and keep my money there. so, in that $100-150 price range, can you suggest a reel that will take at least 100 yards of 20# and an 8wt line? thanks.
* this is mainly for redfish and trout and such on the Texas coast.

Cortland LTD 100.
Mine is over 10 years old, countless Salmo Salar, Saltwater for sea run trout, Pike too.
I bought it back when money was really tight and said to myself, I'll fork out for a fancy reel when this one dies. .... It never has. I also use it now as a renter for clients, so that can attest to it's durability.
The 2004 catalogue retails 'em at 80.00$ USD
There is also a LA version, but I don't know them from experience.

RE: Echo Problems- Why not contact Rajeff Sports directly and see what they can do for you?

BTW-They have this new reel and it looks good doesn't it?
I'd ask them to rob peter to pay paul and upgrade to this one for fun.

perfectloop- You should take the line off and some of the backing everytime you are done for the days fishing and wash it well. Don't you think the salt collects on them to? I just take mine in the shower with me and unwind and rewind it there fast and easy.
flymaker2- I had a Heart reel that had an open spool very close to the way that one looks. I can't tell you the number of times the line caught on or wrapped around that opening. It was such a pain in the butt I sold the reel. JFYI Ron

What were they thinking when they came up with that reel? In the voice of uncle Herb Simpson: "How much does that monstrosity cost?"

What were they thinking when they came up with that reel?
They were thinking, "Hmmm, some people have too much money, and love everything that even resembles hi-tech. What can we do to get that money out of their pocket and into ours?"
