Removing tip guide.
I need to replace a tip on an old rod. It has a spinning type tiptop on there now (glass rod)..want to put a traditional fly rod tip top on it. I know if I heat it up I can twist it off..Wondering if there is a way to do it withought melting the thread/finish wraps on the tip.?
Thanks,
Janus

Well, you can try and boil some water and dunk the tip...more than likely a couple of hot bathes will loosen the glue.
As for "preserving the wraps"...it's like trying to herd cats getting things put back together after...you'll have to re-wrap, no doubt.

Thanks gotta find some banana yellow thread...

You didn't read this on here, but what was your first idea? I have done several that way. Not the thing to do for fancy rods as it probably will darken things some. But, if this is an old rod and a little discoloration won't matter,,, Be VERY careful with the lighter, make a few passes, wave it under, try not to burn/set fire to anything. Hope there is enough glue left on the rod to hold the new guide. :)

Well I intended to use a lighter..but was trying to figure out a way to save the wrap. Maybe covering the wraps with something but they might go regardless.

ONLY heat the metal ... NOT the wraps!!

You've had plenty of time by now :p ... did you do it? Did it work, without burning the wrap?
