I'm new to fly-fishing and have only fished small rivers for trout (Batten Kill).
I'll be in Nome in late july, during the silver salmon run.
I'm bringing my heaviest rod, a 6-wgt.
Can anyone recommend flies and rigging?
Thanks,

Pink 'WOGS' (polly-wogs) and Popsicle fly are good.
Thanks Castwell.
And thanks for a great web-site.
Nome is way out in western Alaska. I don't know about the fishing there. However, July seems a little early for the silvers, particularly if there are kings and sockeye in the same water. I can't say anything with certainty, but it just seems early compared to the silver runs I've fished elsewhere, which doesn't get going until August. There is a number of variables that affect a strong run and the fish remaining in a staging/holding pattern in bays and sounds, with water levels in the freshwater river being one.
NBink,
I just got off of the phone with fish and game in Nome. You want to talk to Scott Kent, but he will not return to the office until next week some time as he is in Anchorage. The phone number is 907-443-5167 at the Nome office and just ask for him. He is a biologist but also likes to fish himself. He should have some great insight as to "where to go and how to do it".
take care,
Alaska Dean
RE: a 6 weight for silvers....you would be a little under-gunned. :o) A 7 or 8 weight is more like it. You will probably be able to get into some good arctic char and grayling fishing around there too. If you are going to target grayling, a 4 weight would be nice.
Alaska Dean, Where you been? I used to read your posts in the Winston site. You still at KCC? brian
Brian,
I am alive and well. Check a PM that I just sent you.
Happy Trails,
Dean
I'd echo what others have said, and say you'd be best off with a good 8 wt w/ a sink tip and floating line.

Thanks to all for your input; Especially Alaska Dean.
I'll definately give Scott Kent a call as the trip nears.
Thanks again.
