13 days and counting!

Wisconsin small streams opens 2 weeks from today!

I fished the Mighty North Umpqua yesterday. Got skunked but it was a beautiful day. If you want to fish year round Oregon is the place- Oh ya, never mind, there aren't any fish in Oregon.

5-8 more inches of snow today on the ALL-time record Wisconsin snow total for a year!
When season opens ....it looks like wading will be the easy way for a while!

stream conditions
spinner1,
I just read the early season forecast from the WI DNR and they mention in several places that the streams which had improvements done to them were actually helped by the floods. Apparently with land use modifications new silt doesn't wash in and with the bank improvements the fast water scours out previous silt so the bottom is back to gravel. They said the year class this year should be very good. I was just wondering if that's what you're seeing.

it scoured everywhere
Lots of the old silted in structure is anew
Many of the streams have been doubled in depth...
Unfortunately some of the streams have been widened also and are about a third of the depth.
Southeastern Minnesota was hammered like that.

You got that right - parts of the Whitewater and Rush Creek are a total shambles. Last I read from the MN DNR Whitewater SP won't open for another year. But a lot of our TU areas with restoration work came out well.

Woah.
First of all, only portions of southeast Minesota were hammered by the August floods. Three streams come to mind that were decimated terribly. It's not like it was a total loss. If anything, it cleaned out a majority of the streams and made fishing exponetially better for the last month of the season, including some very solid BWO action.
The H.I. projects held wonderfully, with the exception of losing a few erosion blankets here and there. The older HI from quite a few years back was ripped up in places, but then again, it wasn't exactly new stuff to begin with. There's no question that HI helped save several streams from being a complete blowout.
The roads into Whitewater Valley opened just in time for the shotgun season for deer and plans are already in the works to have the park open soon. Private campgrounds will be operational this spring and ready to roll as well.
