I agree, the Board is a great place to ask a question. The Blog is a great place to make a statement, brag, stand on the soapbox, and just blow off steam. Basicly anything that doesnt require an answer. I don't know how people blog everyday, its like writing a column for you local paper.

A new quote for the bottom of my posts just occurred to me.
"I got this way by being stupid, what's your excuse"?
Now to the topic at hand: I thought a bulletin board was a blog. Now I have to ask the stupid question. What is a blog, if it isn't a bulletin board. Render some aid to suffering (challenged) humanity please.:(
"A Blog", per se' is really nothing more that "One's own on line diary, written usually first person, extolling the writer's personal opinions, thoughts, ideas, dreams, etc.
Some, are even "private" and not available to be read by anyone but the author, or perhaps, a few very close friends.
In short, "A Blog" is "an electronic soap box".
"A Forum", is an open media, geared to general discussions, questions and answers, sharing of ideas and thoughts, among (usually), like minded people interested in a given subject, and/or, topic.
That's my take, on the two anyway!
Thanks flybinder,
I'd hate to think of fading into the sunset without that little bit of information.;) I can check that one off my bucket list.
Well I thought I might take a stab at being a blogger. Can someone give me the pros and cons of allowing others to put comments on my blog or not? Also what it an Akismet key? Is it a secret password or some special key on the keyboard? I feel like I'm being dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century bit by bit or is that byte by byte?
Thanks for any help.
PS I really liked your blog flybinder. Thanks for the encouragement. The way I like to gab my blog could become larger than faol!
Gnu Bee..........."I" have a Blog? Hmmm, well, if I DO, thank you then and I'm glad you enjoyed it!?!
Sorry, me be an "Art Smass".
Blogging, if you are into writing down your personal thoughts, ideas, dreams, whatever and you enjoy putting these things onto the printed page for others to read, too, then yes...... blogging can actually be everything, from fun to therapeutic.
Depending on "what type" of blog you wish to have, Gnu Bee, you can of course, blog here at FAOL about fly fishing, etc., or if you want to "really let loose and write about anything and everything, on your mind"........with basically no rules attached, then I'd try a place like Blogspot-dot-com. "MSN Live", is another, spot for failry open ended blogging also. Both, are free, you merely "sing up" and start typing!
Then, if you want others to read your writings, simply give them your blog's website address.
I began blogging again, after two medical diagnosis I received the day before last Christmas Eve. I don't blog, here, because this isn't the place, for that kind of blog, obviously. But, "the therapy blogging" is what I need, thus it's done elsewhere on the web.
Now for the "Akismet key" I haven't a CLUE, what that is!?! Sorry! Maybe, it's some sort of "censoring key" and if you hit it, you AND your blog, will self destruct? I, really, have no idea.
"Allowing others to comment on your blog", Gnu Bee, can be "a good thing", or, "a bad thing", depending on where your blog's available. HERE, at FAOL, I think with the far greater majority of our "family" being the great folks they are, I'd say "let 'em comment on it"!! It can make your blog more of a personal writing experience that way at times.
Now, a place, like Blog Spot-dot-com, or MSN Live, if you allow "any and all to comment on your blog entries", then be prepared to receive "comments" (if you can call most of them, that!?), from any one and every one that owns a computer, any place on the planet, with any time and kind of mind set!! Or, in Latin terms.......... "You're going to get A LOT OF WHACKO MAIL!! ha! But, it's true......... an "open blog", is just that.............. "Open to the world, for all to join in".
You also, mentioned "Your blog may be bigger than FAOL"!??!
Well, don't be at ALL surprised if it ISN'T, Gnu Bee!
Way back when, when there were actually people DUMB ENOUGH to pay ME, for writing.......... and I get "blocked", one of my editors told me one time to, "Take a blank sheet of paper and at the top, write down something like "your pet's name". Then, below that, begin jotting down the REASONS your pet HAS that name".
Every time, I had to do this exercise... before I'd STOP writing, I would have filled up 7-9 sheets of a legal tablet. It would BEGIN with "the reasons" of course, but somehow end up with my relating some, other, story somehow linked back in time, to the present! So,don't be surprised, "once the mind's trigger is pulled", just HOW MUCH you'll actually put down, into words!!
But, wherever you may end up, blogging.......HAVE FUN with it!!
Oops i meant flyandtie1 You flyboys all look alike to me.
Thanks for the info.
So anybody out there know what the heck an Akismet key is flybinderandtie1 and I would like to know.
Gee, Gnu Bee, I'm HURT!
I mean, if ya' wanted to KNOW, what an Askimet Key is, ya' could have just ASKED ME!?
I'm, sure, if you're blogging here, at FAOL, that they've already taken care of this, for you. I don't know, I haven't looked at the blog set up here, yet.
"You need to obtain a key from Wordpress and you need to work out licensing with them in regards to a global key. An Akismet Key is more like a "password" to use the program of Wordpress, when it is the main blogging directory".
See? Easy! Like, I said.......... "ALL ya' needed to do, was ask me"!!
(Geesh, some people's kids!)
Hey Gnu, Thanks for the comment!
Allowing people to make comments is how most blogs are set up. Not allowing comments is usually for private blogs that you write for yourself and no one else.
