I believe that article on pointless fly fishing was in Flyfisherman decades ago.
As I remember they had T.A.G. hooks (touch and go) that had an eye where the barb should be.
I have always thought that getting the fish to strike the fly was the most exciting part of the game. Sometimes 'fighting' the fish gets in the way of catching (tagging) the next one.
