My First Blue Gill Popper
Thought I would see what you guys think. I got a tiny bit of paint on the legs, but that will happen since I paint after putting the legs in. I really didn't think out the color pattern, but it still cam out OK. I have a lot of ideas about this stuff.

I'd use it and probably catch them feisty buggers all day and into the evening!!!
You are building some really nice flies and jigs and poppers Skip! I have yet to see one of your posts that does not look really nice. You have some skilz! (As the kidz would say. ;) )
Thanks for continually sharing your talent with us!

Skip,
Darn good looking popper. If you don't get some hot top water action from that, those gills are crazy. Really nice job.

Re: My First Blue Gill Popper
good popper. what type of paint did u use and how did u paint the eyes on? did u just use different size dowel rods for the eyes?
Re: My First Blue Gill Popper
The paint you got on the leg killed it for me. Oh well, may be next time. :(
Just kidding! Very nice popper! You have shown us some very nice flies over the past year. Have you considered doing a FOTW?
Re: My First Blue Gill Popper
Dang! I wish that I could tie that good! I guess I just need a sweet vise like you and the patience you have too! If you wanna know how well they catch fish, I can be Skip Field Tester!!!
I have been messing with some popper bodies but I am really no good!
What kind of paint do you use? Is that a marabou tail with plain black hackle (what kind of hackle?)? Dang! That is a sweet popper!
Re: My First Blue Gill Popper
OK, the paint is Acrylic Gloss and I clear coat over with Sally Henson Hard as Nails or gloss Lacquer.
I paint my eyes with some drill bits using the flat end. You can get a cheap set and make different sizes.
That is a hackle tail like I use on jigs, the cheap stuff, strung neck hackle. I have it in most ever color for my jigs so if I need a tail on flies there it is. I also have most every color of marabou known to man.
The other hackle (black) is the more costly kind.

That was funny.
I have thought if I ever tied one that looked good enough I would and actually I did think about this one...

I also thought about my shrimp and my Crappie Candy, but I didn't know if they were good enough to go for it. Anyway I would sure think about it if anyone thought I should.
Thanks,

Wow, that popper looks great. I wish I could make them like that.
