Kill Devil Hills
I don't frequent this side of the tracks (salt forum) very often, but I was looking for a little advice and direction.
We're spending a week in a beach house in Kill Devil Hills, NC at the end of October. I was hoping someone could provide me with some tips on some shorefishing (flies/rod weight recommendations as well) opportunities in the area at that time of year, and also some recommended guides. It sounds like the false albacore and stripers might be hitting around then.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Kill Devil Hills
A 9 wt would be a good choice, a 10 probably better than an 8 (because of wind).
Check with local sources for favorites once you're there or defer to the NC experts on this board, especially important for albies, but good fly choices to start tying would be:
Deceivers size 1/0 (or 2/0) to imitate menhaden, mullet etc. I like blue/white for most of my fishing, olive/white second choice, all chartruse a distant third but helpful in dense schools of baitfish and in murky water. Great for Stripers, Blues, Spanish Macks, Sea Trout etc
Clouser size 1, lead or lead sub dumbell eyes, to imitate sandeels and spearing and get down in deeper water. A hot local pattern down there is a orange over black for some reason. But I'd rely on the old standbys like chartreuse or chart/white, and all white. Good for stripers, blues, sea trout, drum etc.
Epoxy surf candies good for all species, but especially for albacore, sp. macks and bonito. The Albies are notoriously difficult to catch, but small size 2 (not 2/0) epoxy flies tied up tans and white imitate bay anchovies and whitebait up here which the Albacore and bonito key on. They give the best shot at a hook up, while all other stuff often gets ignored. Check out the fly archives here on FAOL for the Flash Fly, it looks to be a great easy to tie albie pattern, tho I haven't used it.
Some Blados Crease Flies would be good to make or pick up too. They're a blast when fish are on top, and have picked up their share of albies too.
If you plan on going out on a charter there are cobia, jacks, kings and blacktips too, and maybe a shot at dolphin (mahi mahi) so some bigger flies like half and halfs with lots of flash might be worth packing or picking up as well, tho you could also rely on the guide for those i guess...
Hope this helps. Have a great trip and let us know how you made out.
