Re: Do Salamanders eat fish?
In my opinion, the salamanders probably eat dragonfly nymphs and all the other kinds of trout food. I don't think salamanders are as quick as trout, so I don't see how they could catch a trout.

Re: Do Salamanders eat fish?
Here's a link to information about the ones in my area streams. I researched after seeing one in the river. It was very BIG (maybe 2 ft long)!
According to the information on the link, it eats mostly crayfish: "A common myth is that hellbenders will 'ruin' good fishing streams by eating all the fish. This couldn't be farther from the truth! In fact, if you see hellbenders in a stream, this is an excellent indication that the water quality is still good"

Well, I've caught a couple of good sized browns over the years that had a salamander in their insides.

Re: Do Salamanders eat fish?
There is a salamander that I saw on the planet earth series that is 6ft long and does eat fish. I'm fairly certain that it was on the caves episode. Just type in Japanese Giant Salamander into google images...its enormous. That salamander definitely eats fish.
Re: Do Salamanders eat fish?
I think I found the name of the salamander it is Dicamptodon tenebrosus - Coastal Giant Salamander. It is in the north west and can grow to 14 inches. The site I found it on is http://www.californiaherps.com/index.html.
Happy fishing.

Re: Do Salamanders eat fish?
well i kow they are on eheck of a bass bait . I think they are more apt to eat the eggs of fish .
Re: Do Salamanders eat fish?
Dicamptodon is the top predator in a lot of places, and they will eat anything they can, including fish. We used to catch them occasionally while crawdad fishing, and would see them in streams while doing bat surveys at night. You can occasionally find them in the woods, as well.
