How many wraps do you put on to hold materials?

How many wraps do you use in your whip finish?

I typically do three- four wraps to bind in stuff and three wraps on the finish with a whip finishing tool.

However, on things like chernobyl ants, I will do up to 15 wraps on the areas where I am going to place the legs so that they are positioned correctly. I may do more wraps on EHC and the like...

On zebra midges, I use hundreds of wraps, hahahahaha.

It is one of the areas that i am trying to improve.

I usually use 3-4 wraps to hold materials on. I do 2 whip finishes of 3 turns each. I usually do not put anything on the heads. I don't have any problems doing things that way.

Where it matters:

One to position, two to secure.

For whip finishing, where you need a strong hold

three-four wraps, twice.

If I'm worried about bulk, then just two half hitches with a drop a lacquer.

I always use three wraps on my whip finish. I then will usually put an extra two. To tie in material, it depends. If I am tying it in a tight spot with little room, usually five to six. But when you have room probably three to five.

As few as possible, (usually 2 or 3) and four or five to whip finish.

I read once to wrap three times to hold something so I do, for everything. Also, I must be neurotic because the first thing my dad taught me as a little nipper learning to tie a hook on was to wrap the line six times, and even though I am now in my fifties, I cannot do less, or more, it has to be six. Just thought I'd share it...

If you are tieing something in, and another material is going ontop, use 1 wrap for the first and then tieing in the next material your subsequent wraps will hold the first. Also, instead of just tieing in the same spot, try and spread your wraps next to eachother to make a smooth tappered body, or head or whatever. That as opposed to bumps that may form from wraping in the same spot over and over to secure a material. There is no rule to how many though, just remember Less is More.

Fewer wraps with Uni-Thread. I often break 8/0 if I put more than 3 wraps on a whip-finish when using it.
