I wanted to tie up some wet flys using muskrat. I started taking the hair off of the skin.
Have you ever tried taking hair off a muskrat that doesn't want you to? Sheesh. :D :D :D :D

Hey Rick, that made me think
If someone did try to take the hair off of a live muskrat, he should either be given a medal for dedication to the art of fly tying or someone should take his hooks away from him. Whadaya think?
I think a few adult beverages are in order, before performing this activity. Either for the muskrat or the skinner.
Chuck
Take the hooks away.I've netted muskrats twice now and relocated them out of the irrigation ditch they were destroying.I don't think I would want to try and trim a live one. They are pretty squirmy.
Just picture this:
Camping/fishing trip up in the mountains, in the wild, far from the reaches of mankind, you are tying flies by the camp fire for the next day and decide you need to tie a pattern with muskrat. Only you forgot to bring your muskrat dubbing but there is one eying you within your reach???????????????
Rookie,
Never tried to skin a live one, but I can tell ya how to cook a "skeened" one. Just be sure he is "dispatched" well before you start.
Rookie, since you want the underfur from him, just do what I do with my sister's cats. I tell them that I am grooming them just because they are special. I stop when I have a cat comb full of dubbing. They are starting to get suspicious of me. If her sheltie is visiting, he leaves the room if I start to tye flies.

This little one kept me company for the three days I fished around this section of the stream. He'd move when I moved. There's no way, looking at those teeth and toenails, that I'd have attempted to groom him!! But the company was welcomed.
I love the posts guys. Betty, that was beautiful.
I however, must come clean. I was only removing some fur from a muskrat pelt that had been given to me. In lieu of some recent posts, I thought a little humour was in order. While removing the fur, I invisioned a face looking at me with teeth bareing, hence the post.
