A good suggestion, Brahma hen isn't a bad substitute.

If you can find a hunter who shoots better than I have so far this year (0/1) ruffled grouse works well.
Nice fly Donald i'll have to look for those saddles. rainbowchaser i hunt but not grouse i have a couple buddies that do so i'll have to ask them for some feathers.

Warm Water,
What are you going to use the feathers for? Legs, wrapped hackles ? What size flies will you be tying? What patterns? There are a few other choices.

wrapped hackles size # 12
Brahma Hen saddles are a great substitution for that size. Another alternative would be Whiting Coq de Leon Hen capes in brown speckled, silver speckled or dun , these can be very nice. The speckling is less dramatic than partridge or Brahma saddles though, they tend to have "smaller spots".
Just curious, why do you want a substitute for Hungarian Partridge? Size 12 feathers are plentiful on a partridge skin.
not enough $$ for a skin. wanted to see if i had a substite handy

Warm Water,
I see on your profile that you are a student. Send me your Name and Address and I will give you a 1 or 2 ounce bag of bulk Partridge feathers I purchsed a few years ago. I didn't have the patience to sort them out. There is a few good feathers in the bag.
