I've seen that happen several times over the years in Colorado. Mommy and the ducklings swimming along, a large splash, and one less duckling.....
It's also pretty commmon with largemouth bass.
You could buy one of those little yellow rubber duckies, the ones that folks collect that come in hundreds of different styles. I think the 'fisherman' one would be appropriate, but the one doing the 'I love you' in ASL speaks to my sense of humor... Pierce it with a large hook...some feathers to add some movement, and you'd have an effective pattern. Definitley need the 9 or 10 weight to throw it, though....
