Great info Norm! sodium hypochlorite solution is the chemical word for bleach water. The trick is to find the right combination. too much bleach and you can damage the quills, not enough and the barbs wont burn off. Start with a more diluted mix and add more bleach as needed.
I dabbled in stripping dyed cheap neck hackle quills with this method a few years ago and the quills, once all the barbules were burned off still had a tinge of the dye color.
I first heard of the bleaching technique from a Dick Talleur video and he said after he strips them in the bleach water solution, he soaks them in a hair conditioner solution to keep them pliable.
