What size hackle do you use?
The traditional Catskill uses something like 1.5x to 2x the gape with the collar about 75% of the wing height. If you don't use a wing, do you oversize your hackle? And if you oversize your hackle, do you oversize your tail?
I just tie the pattern normally but omit the wings.

That's what I would figure. But in theory, at least, you've got short wings.
I just omit the wings. The trout don't seem to care.

I don't use hackle.
