Time with the lad
The missus was away on business in San Diego for a week after the New Year, and not wanting to let this interfere with my fishing I took the boy with me on Sunday.
He found the grayling fishing a little hard, but we managed to catch him his first grayling, which he was very pleased about.

As he was finding the river a little tough I took him onto the lake. In 45 minutes the lad managed to catch a 2lb, 4lb and 6lb rainbow. I lived in fear of loosing the rod and reel with the bigger fish and he got a nasty rap on the knuckles from the reel which lead him to tears but he still insisted on continuing to play the fish.

He was pretty pleased with his days efforts.

Not entirely sure who was the most happy though.

JME,
Thanks for sharing. Your son grin says it all.
I can't wait until my son is old enough to take ff. He is 22 months old now and I am preparing him for the day by showing him some ff and casting videos I have as well as let him hang out with me when I tie flies.

You rock bud! Keep it up.

Looks like he is already going to outfish you lol !!! Reminds me of my two boys. It's always great to be out on the water with them, & their excitement brings back the little kid in me when I was a fly fishing youngster !!!! Thanks for sharing !!!!
-
are you telling us that that little lad was casting the fly rod and landing those fish? Or did you do the fisng, and just let him reel 'em in? Either way is awesome, but if he's casting at that young age, I have some nephews who are going to be mighty lucky this year at Birthday time!!
-
bwagner, No; I would cast the fly out for him and hand him the rod. We are still working on his roll cast, but he is not too bad for a 5 year old.
TyroneFly, I bought him his first rod when he was a year old, a nice little redington 5'9" #4. They are never too young eh.
Chris, he was asleep in the car before we even got home. I put him in his pyjamas and tucked him into bed without him even stirring.
Harold, it does not look to promising for the Fish-In this year. I think he would love to come along next year though.
It was a very good day for both of us. I was concerned that he would get bored or disturb the fish, but I need not have worried. I rarely keep any fish, but I left the decision to him on the fish which were of size and he decided that they would go back. We got some pictures for Mum first, just so she knew how her men spent the time.

JME, What a great day. Looks like the weather was far from sunny and 65 also. I hope this summer my 7 year old grandson will use the 3 wt on the pond and enjoy using the fly instead of the worms, I can't wait.
You will be missed at the fish in. I have an extra roll of medical tape for that stripping finger of yours http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/wink.gif
The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, his fingers on the reel handle and yours on the line.
Great job and enjoy every minute with him.
Tight lines and long runs to all
Philip
