Question on Sieves for Sampling Hatches

Hi All,

What do you use to sample water for what trout are feeding on?

You who make your own, what do you use for a screen?

Took an old nylon stocking and put it over my landing net to sift the drift; if the water was shallow enough I could also hold it downstream and dislodge some rocks with my foot or hand to catch some of the stuff crawling/clinging to the bottom.

I have one, it was given to me by a friend and it is commercial, the sieve is just nylon window screen. it has two collapsible sticks on the end (think 1' tent poles with bungee cords to hold them solid. the poles and the sieve fold up to fit easily into a pocket. I am sure you could do the same thing with dowels

I use a Quick-Seine. Packs in a small pouch on my net, then stretches over the net when needed. A very handy accessory, especially in cold winter water.

I use an aquarium net - approx 3" square openning, with a handle that is about 12" long. Fits nicely in the Camelbak hydration pack I always have with me ( at least in the car, if not while fishing close by ).

Is it anything like an aquarium net for tropical fish, or like the tiny dip net that we used to use for minnows from a minnow bucket back when I was a bait dunker?

Follow the link for something very similar, if not exactly the same, as I use. I think I got mine at petsmart, but it might have been one of the other pet shops in Idaho Falls when I lived down there.

Much of the time I don't take a landing net - only where the water is swift or the fish large do I need it. So sometimes I have an aquarium net hanging from my vest (to sample bugs). I guess there are jokes behind my back, but I don't listen.

I think someone on this board suggested paint strainer bags a few years ago. You can wad one up and carry it in your vest, then slip it over your landing net as needed. They come in a few sizes.
