St. Petersburg, FL
I'm going be in St. Petersburg, FL, this Friday/Saturday and am debating whether to pack my salt water rod. Are there any decent spots for shore fishing? Any suggestions on places, tackle, web sites I could look on for local techniques would be appreciated.
As much as I'd like to hire a guide, it's not in this month's budget!

fort desoto park has lots of foot accessable (sp) flats on the east end of the island (twds the skyway)
as far as fishing techniques i'll leave that up to the folks that have actually caught a fish on a fly rod LOL (saltwater )

Since it's going to be close to 80 degree temps from tomorrow thru the week, you should check the Florida Fish-In pages from years past on the FAOL Home page !The only place I'm familiar with is the flats off of northwest end of the Skyway Bridge frontage road! 8)

Do not leave fly rod behind. I lived in st pete for 7 years. Bring a 6wt to a 9 wt. Check with local shops for the latest info & ask for Bill V at Bill Jacksons outdoor shop. Many flats in Fort D. Try arrowhead picnic area one of my best places to fish in Fort D. Hope this helps some.

Thanks for the recommendations, guys. I'll plan on stopping by Bill Jackson's when I arrive. Good excuse to buy some flies. Do I need flats boots, or will river sandals be ok?
-
I would use flats boots or old army boots cause sandles will be donated to the mud gods in some areas.

All,
Thanks for your advice. I got some great guidance from the guys at Bill Jackson's (worth going into that store just to see the indoor ski lessons!) and headed down to Fort DeSoto. The fishing was a bit quiet due to a high pressure system that pushed through two days before, but there were sea trout to be found. Beautiful location! Thanks again!
