Justice League,
This is a very informative site:
http://outerbanksflyfishing.com/forum/
Scroll down to the bottom and look for the articles section. There's some good stuff about wade fishing in the spring/summer. What to fish, where to fish, etc.
Have fun, I've been there a few times (Ocrocoke Isl, & Corova).
It's a beautiful part of our country.
Tom.

Obx
Hey Justice League,
Fly fishing at OBX is a very spotty thing. I've been trying to fly fish down there in late July/early August for the past 4 years and a lot depends on the water temp. The web site you have got to check out is www.outerbanksflyfishing.com as Scooter mentioned. Capts. Sarah and Brian know more about flyfishing OBX than most of us know about our home streams. There are several areas that are conducive to fly fishing (my catch ratio not withstanding) that Brian has on his forum. Any internet mapping program will target in on these areas with ease.
As far as rods, I use an 8 weight with both floating and intermediate lines and mainly clouser minnows. I've caught bluefish on the clousers with bite tippets. Brian will have that kind of info in the article.
I highly recommend that you contact Brian or Sarah and book a charter. Their prices are reasonable, they are very, very reputable, and are very helpful to Saltwater flyfishing rookies. Plus they always know where the catchable fish are.
Enough said, Check out the website and all your questions will be answered. But be careful, once you visit OBX you'll never be the same. Plus you'll be eligible to become a pirate on the saltwater forum!
Good luck

That's Brian Horsley's site -- they'll all take care of you well out of that shop.
Good luck!

Had a great trip out there recently, but that was the middle of October. I think you'lll be hitting different species than we were (the false albacore were fantastic, even though we couldn't fly fish for them).
I suggest bringing a big, heavy baitcasting outfit if you plan on fishing in the surf as well. It was pretty rough while I was out there (actually had a hard time not playing in the waves to get some shore-fishing in), but I stumbled into quite a few skates using cut bait. They were fun to play with.
Anyway, if you want to check out another guide, Captain Rick Caton took us out and got us into some good schools of albacore. He worked like crazy to put us on fish in the rough conditions we had, and he's the guy I'm going with next time.

Jeff,
I am so pleased to hear that you did well with Rick Caton. I believe I had recommended you contact Rick, who has become a valued friend of mine over the years. You will simply NOT find a harder working, more productive Captain than Rick, although his son Patrick (formerly Rick's Mate & now a Captain) would be a good one too.
BTW, a place I would try fly fishing is down the path behind the Bodie (pronounced "body") Island Lighthouse. There were always some dandy specks back there, but if wading, don your waders as that is a jellyfish haven back there....Clousers & deceivers would be the choice & most folks swear by green & chartreuse.
